Season 2 of The Witcher is soon here: Geralt and Ciri will journey to Witcher keep Kaer Morhen in the second season of the Netflix drama about our favourite monster hunter, which will premiere on December 17, 2021. This season will also feature popular Witcher characters like as Vesemir, Eskel, and Lambert.

The programme is based on Andrzej Sapkowski's Witcher books (rather than the games, which is how we first met Geralt and his companions), and the first season began with a jumbled collection of vignettes. We may expect a more linear approach in the second season, as Geralt and Ciri explore their entwined fates.

Covid-19 precautions hindered the development of The Witcher season 2, although it was completed in April 2021 and is now in post-production. Here's all we know so far about The Witcher 2 and what to expect.

As predicted, Henry Cavill reprises his role as Geralt of Rivia, the eponymous monster-hunting Witcher, continuing his exploits across the enormous globe of the Continent. With the first season's complicated multiple timelines finally matched, The Witcher season 2 reunites Geralt with orphaned princess Ciri (Freya Allan), and you can bet they'll run with the show's third perspective character, the magician known as Yennefer of Vengerberg, soon (Anya Chalotra).

From the release date and first trailer to plot details, episode titles, and new characters, we've been on an extensive fact-finding mission through Geralt's world to find out what's in store for The Witcher season 2 – from the release date and first trailer to plot details, episode titles, and new characters. This sophomore year is shaping up to be just as important as the first, with more Witchers, more magic, more double-crossing, and more political intrigue on the horizon.

The Witcher season 2 release date

Season 2 of The Witcher will premiere on December 17, 2021. When the season premieres on Netflix, the entire eight-episode season will be available to view.
The date was confirmed in July at WitcherCon, and it places the second season two years after the first, which came out in December 2019.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, production for The Witcher season 2 was delayed a few times. During the first few months of the pandemic, Netflix halted production on all of its series. The Witcher ensemble reunited on set on August 17, 2020, although filming was delayed in November 2020 due to the positive test results of four crew members. It was restarted, however Henry Cavill had a minor injury on set in December 2020, which postponed filming once more.

Season 2 filming finished in early April 2021, and Hissrich revealed in May that Netflix was "deep into post-production" on the second season.

Season 2 trailer for The Witcher

In July 2021, as part of the WitcherCon event, Netflix published the entire two-minute teaser trailer for The Witcher season 2 — check it out above. Given how much of the first season revolved around Geralt's quest to fulfil the Law of Surprise that binds him to Ciri, the orphaned heir/Lion Cub of Cintra, it's no surprise that the debut trailer for The Witcher season 2 picks up where the first left off.

Geralt takes Ciri under his wing now that he has established contact with her, taking her to Kaer Morhen, the citadel where he developed his Witcher powers. Presumably, he intends to teach her the ways of the Witcher as she tries to figure out her position on the Continent following the murders of her family and the fall of her kingdom — she admits that "sometimes I feel so terrified, I feel like I could burn the entire world."

In the aftermath of season 1's climactic Battle of Sodden Hill, the final member of The Witcher's pivotal triumvirate, Yennefer of Vengerberg, is briefly seen. Fringilla, the Nilfgaardian wizard who played a key role in Cintra's downfall, finds her and simply says, "Welcome back..." Does this imply that Yennefer will begin Season 2 of The Witcher in Nilfgaardian custody? Fringilla and Yennefer aren't going to be pals, are they?

“We're digging deeper into [Fringilla’s] past and how she ended up at Nilfgaard,” showrunner Lauren S Hissrich told Vulture. “Who she is as a person, and how she and Yennefer ended up on such different paths."

Netflix published a new teaser in September 2021 that combined highlights from season 1 with a tonne of new material from season 2 - including the first decent look at Kim Bodnia's Vesemir. Take a look at this:

The Witcher season 2 episode titles have been revealed

The episode titles for season 2 were revealed as part of WitcherCon. They are:

  • A Grain of Truth
  • Kaer Morhen
  • What is Lost
  • Redanian Intelligence
  • Turn Your Back
  • Dear Friend
  • Voleth Meir
  • TBC
The title of the eighth and final episode is supposedly so top-secret that we'll have to wait to find out what it is. Season 2 of The Witcher has a few hints in the episode names. 'A Grain of Truth' is based on a short storey from Andrzej Sapkowki's novel The Last Wish, which contains Nivellen, a character performed by Kristofer Hivju from Game of Thrones in The Witcher season 2. The name of a citadel where Witchers are taught is 'Kaer Morhen.' 'Redanian Intelligence' alludes to Redania, a country on the Continent with a world-class surveillance network; the name of a news site dedicated to The Witcher is likewise Redanian Intelligence. The phrase 'Dear Friend' is most likely a reference to a letter Geralt wrote to Yennefer in the Witcher books. Voleth Meir, on the other hand, is a new character played by Ania Marson. Voleth Meir is elven for 'Deathless Mother,' and the character appears to play a key role in Ciri's storey.

While Geralt was a lone (White) wolf in Season 1, Season 2 will introduce us to a few other Witchers. We know that Kim Bodnia (Killing Eve) will play Witcher trainer Vesemir, who also features in the animated Witcher prequel film Nightmare of the Wolf, and that we'll be visiting the Witcher school at Kaer Morhen.

Paul Bullion, Yasen Atour, and Basil Eidenbenz will play fellow Witchers Lambert, Con, and Eskel, respectively, while Joel Adrian will play another Witcher named Hemrik, according to Redanian Intelligence.

Lambert and Eskel, both members of Geralt and Vesemir's School of the Wolf, will be familiar to fans of the book and videogames. Given that these monster-slaying experts are often seen to be a dying breed, it's fascinating that the producers are apparently tossing in extra Witchers for season 2. While other Witcher schools such as the Cat and Bear are mentioned in the novels, Geralt's faction appears to be one of the only Witcher factions actively fighting the monster danger facing the Continent.

Other cast members include Kristofer Hivju, who is well known for his role as Tormund Giantsbane on Game of Thrones, who will play Nivellen, a man cursed with the body of a monster. (Given that the opening episode of The Witcher season 2, 'A Grain of Truth,' is also the title of the Andrzej Sapkowski short storey in which he appears, we're guessing we'll see him there.)

Netflix announced the addition of seven new characters to the ensemble in March 2021. They were Adjoa Andoh of Bridgerton as Nenneke, a priestess of Melitele in the books; Liz Carr of Silent Witness as Fenn; Simon Callow of Four Weddings and a Funeral as Fenn's partner, Codringher; Graham McTavish of Outlander as Redanian armed forces head Dijkstra; Cassie Clare as Redanian royal advisor Philippa Eilhart; and Kevin Doyle of Downton Abbey as Ba'L

Francesca is played by Mecia Simson, Lydia is played by Aisha Fabienne Ross, and Vereena is played by Agnes Bjorn. According to Deadline, Carmel Laniado has joined the cast as Violet, a teenage girl who will appear in at least three episodes.

What is the plot of season 2 of The Witcher?

The Witcher's season 2 plot has been teased by Netflix. "Believing Yennefer was killed in the Battle of Sodden, Geralt of Rivia takes Princess Cirilla to his childhood home of Kaer Morhen, the safest place he knows. While the Continent's kings, elves, humans, and demons fight for dominance on the outside, he must defend the girl from something far more dangerous: the enigmatic power she possesses within."

Season 2 appears to contain the wild hunt, based on images taken by Redanian Intelligence during production. The Wild Hunt are The Witcher 3's final foes and subtitle, and readers of the novels will recognise them from their pursuit of Ciri in the fourth book, Time of Contempt. We don't know how big of a show these terrifying riders will put on just yet.

Season 2's plot will also be much more linear, according to our sources. Season 2's timeline will be much easier to follow now that all of The Witcher's primary protagonists are in one area (and at the same time), Hissrich revealed in an AMA with fans. The simpler timeline, on the other hand, allows the authors to exploit time in ways they couldn't in Season 1. Season 2 will, for example, use flashbacks to examine Geralt's past. Season 2 will also "get more into Cahir and Fringilla," the plot's evil characters so far, according to creator Lauren Hissrich.

Season 3 of The Witcher has been confirmed, and there may be more seasons to come.

The Witcher's first season defied the notion that it was simply here to fill a Game of Thrones-shaped void in our lives. It confidently told stories in its own unique style and provided a magical world that had previously captivated people's minds on Xboxes and PlayStations. While we are unlikely to see much spillage from the games in the Netflix programme – according to author Sapkowski, they are a "free adaptation combining parts of [his] work," rather than canon – we know fans will enjoy many subtle references to the games, as they did in season 1.

The Witcher could also be available on Netflix for a long time. Lauren S Hissrich claims to have planned out seven seasons of television. And we're very sure there's still enough source material for that to work.

We have the whole stories of Geralt, Ciri, and Yennefer to play out. It transports them over the Continent to a wide range of settings and exposes us to some of the best fantasy characters available. Ciri's growth provides a solid foundation for future stories in The Witcher universe that incorporate themes of family and love, as well as mystery and magic. The Witcher: Blood Origin, a prequel series, is also in the works.

Season 3 of The Witcher was announced in September 2021.
