Star Wars: Battlefront 2 Developer Promises Multiplayer Fix
Players in Star Wars: Battlefront 2 began reported an issue in October that rendered entire lobbies of characters unkillable. By December, the issue had become so widespread that many players had deemed the game unplayable. Now, a DICE community manager has promised supporters that "it will be fixed."
The problem appears to affect numerous Battlefront 2 multiplayer modes on PC only, with full matches of players unable to be dropped below 1HP - therefore rendering games worthless, with games finishing only after a timeout or, more likely when all players quit.
The issue appears to have lingered for months, and it may have become worse over time. On the EA Forums, a post titled "Nobody can die" from October 19, 2021, has received 1,497 answers, while the Star Wars: Battlefront 2 subreddit has seen dozens of discussions on the subject. At first, the problem looked to be random, but by December, many gamers said they couldn't locate a single multiplayer session on PC that wasn't affected.
Official EA and DICE responses have been scarce, with numerous community managers stating that the issue was being investigated, but little else. A comment from DICE community manager Kevin Johnson (a.k.a. T0TALfps) brought further hope yesterday. A Battlefront 2 fan inquired for an update on the 1HP issue in a Reddit thread discussing Battlefield 2042. Johnson responded, "
"With folks only just returning to the office this past week, progress has understandably (and unfortunately) been slow through the holidays. However progress was made towards getting a fix in place, it will be fixed, and we'll keep you all updated when they can do so."
Players have expressed cautious optimism in response to those statements, but with no timetable for the repair, playing Battlefront 2 multiplayer on PC may remain a challenge for the time being. EA has been approached for comment.
Even after a repair, one question may remain: where this problem originated and why it seems to have become worse over time. While some have claimed that 1HP troubles have been a game bug for years, many feel that this particular type of problem was caused by hackers, resulting in a spike in problems last year. Some have pointed to a website that claims to have distributed the hack for free – and that it may have been distributed without the ability to turn it off, resulting in an increase in the number of incidents over time.
The problem arises at an inopportune time for DICE, which has been dealing with a slew of concerns over Battlefield 2042's release and ongoing development, which has resulted in low Steam ratings and accusations of toxicity on a subreddit.
On the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, Star Wars: Battlefront II is now available. You can read more about the game in our prior coverage.
