Sony acquires Bungie for $3.6 billion
Bungie, best known for Destiny and Halo, will be purchased by Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) for $3.6 billion on Monday. Bungie's CEO and chairman, Pete Parsons, states on the company's official blog that the studio will remain autonomous and continue to release games across many platforms while gaining additional backing from Sony.
“Like us, SIE believes that game worlds are only the beginning of what our IPs can become,” Parsons said. “Together, we share a dream of creating and fostering iconic franchises that unite friends around the world, families across generations, and fans across multiple platforms and entertainment mediums.”
"We remain in power of our fate," Parsons continues. We will continue to self-publish and develop our games in a unique way. We'll keep pushing for a cohesive Bungie community. "Wherever our community chooses to play, our games will continue to be there."
Parson's rhetoric is intriguing, especially the emphasis on independence while still publishing games on numerous platforms. Many speculated when Microsoft bought Activision Blizzard two weeks ago if titles like Call of Duty would remain on PlayStation — which they will, for the time being.
PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan describes Bungie's new role within the firm on SIE's blog. It's possible that games like Destiny 2 will remain on Xbox and PC.
“Bungie’s successful track record in multi-format publishing and live game services will assist us in realizing our ambitions to take PlayStation beyond the console and increase our potential audience,” Ryan explains. “They will remain independent and multi-platform, will enjoy creative freedom, and their track record in developing massively successful franchises in the sci-fi shooter genre will be highly complementary to SIE’s own IP portfolio.”
