BAFTA Awards Nominations: Full list of nominations

Dune, Denis Villeneuve's vast sci-fi blockbuster, has received 11 nominations for the 2022 BAFTA film awards, which were announced on Thursday, putting it in front of the group of 48 films contending for gold statuettes at the presentation on March 13.

The results of Dune are unlikely to surprise many people; the film was widely expected to win, particularly in the craft categories, as it has (it also bagged a best film nomination). Neither are Jane Campion's The Power of the Dog's eight nominations nor Kenneth Branagh's Belfast's six. The 2022 list is awash in new faces, unexpected additions, and several significant absentees (probably most notably the full snubbing of Kristen Stewart's Princess Diana drama Spencer), but it's the nominations elsewhere that are likely to get the industry buzzing.

While Benedict Cumberbatch, Will Smith, and Leonardo DiCaprio have all received best actor nominations (DiCaprio's sixth and, surprisingly, Smith's first), Mahershala Ali, as well as British stars Adeel Akhtar (for After Love) and Stephen Graham (for Boiling Point), have filled the remaining slots, leaving out several actors who were considered awards frontrunners, such as Andrew Garfield (whose Tick Tick... Boom! also failed

There was no room for BAFTA favourites Olivia Colman (The Lost Daughter) or Nicole Kidman (Being the Ricardos) in the best actress category, with After Love's Joanna Scanlan, Passing's Tessa Thompson, and The Worst Person in the World's Renate Reinsve joining Lady Gaga, Alana Haim, and Emilia Jones.

This trend continued in the supporting categories, with 19 of the 24 performance positions in 2022 being filled by first-time nominees, according to BAFTA. The best supporting actor shortlist is completely made up of BAFTA debutants, including BAFTA's first deaf nominee, CODA star Troy Kotsu.

The biggest surprise for 2022, though, may be the award for outstanding director. There are no Villeneuve (a strange omission given its 11 nominations elsewhere), Branagh (perhaps the biggest shock of all since he's on home soil), or Spielberg (West Side Story) alongside Paul Thomas Anderson (Licorice Pizza) and Jane Campion (The Power the Dog), as some may have assumed (whose film only managed to land five BAFTA nominations after topping the longlist with 15 placings). Instead, Aleem Khan (After Love), Ryûsuke Hamaguchi (Drive My Car), Audrey Diwan (Happening), and Palme d'Or winner Julia Ducournau received BAFTA nominations (Titane).

The 2022 list underscores the British Academy's efforts to change the voting process and create what it has repeatedly described as a "level playing field" for all films, which it underwent a gruelling review to improve diversity in its awards just two years ago, resulting in the most diverse mix of nominees in its history in 2021.
