Elden Ring: Does It Support Cross-Play or Cross-Gen?
Elden Ring will be released on February 25 for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PS4, PS5, and PC. You might be wondering if Elden Ring allows cross-play with so many supported platforms. Unfortunately, it does not fully support it, but if you choose the proper version, you can still play the game with your friends on another machine.
Elden Ring cross-gen support
Elden Ring supports "cross-gen" play, which means that players from the same console family can play the game together. You can play together if you're on Xbox One and your friend is on Xbox Series X, for example. The same regulation applies to PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 purchases. If you know a friend who already has a PS5 and you don't, you can save money by purchasing the PS4 version.
Elden Ring cross-play support
Full cross-play is not supported by Elden Ring. You will only be able to play with other PlayStation users if you are using a PlayStation system. The same may be said for the Xbox and PC.
Elden Ring current-gen upgrade
If you don't have a new console yet but want to play Elden Ring, it comes with a free current-gen upgrade from the same console family. Start it on Xbox One, and you'll get the Xbox Series X|S version for free thanks to Smart Delivery. The same is true for PS4 to PS5, albeit you'll have to double-check that you've downloaded the right version because it doesn't use the Smart Delivery mechanism.
