Players in Animal Crossing: New Horizons can enjoy their own island by decorating it and spending time with the villagers. Nintendo, on the other hand, has allowed players to move within the game by sending them on mystery island trips. The game has various mystery islands for players to explore. However, they visit some islands far less frequently than others. These are known as rare mystery islands. At the moment, there is no method for gamers to improve their odds of landing on a rare mystery island. Depending on their luck, they may yet end up on these rare islands. In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, players can go on mystery island excursions in one of two ways: by chatting to Orville or, with the 2.0 update, by talking to Kapp'n. In the case of Kapp'n, players must merely interact with him, and for 1,000 Nook Miles, they can embark on a mystery island round trip with the NPC. While most mystery islands are resource-rich, there is no way to guarantee that players will find a rare mystery island such as Money Rock or Fin.

Since the game's debut in March 2020, players have had access to the Orville method, also known as the Airport method. This approach requires players to go to the Airport and chat with Orville, who will ask whether they want to go somewhere. To use this method, players must have a Nook Mile Ticket, which can be purchased for 2,000 Nook Miles at Nook's Cranny. Orville will send gamers on a surprise island vacation after they produce the Nook Mile Ticket. Once again, there's no way of knowing whether gamers will find a rare or common mystery island.

Although rare mystery islands typically have far more expensive stuff to give players in the game, ordinary mystery islands also have a lot to offer, such as fruits, flowers, and even residents. While a rare mystery island is preferable, players can still benefit from common mystery islands.
