It's critical to know where you are on a map in Escape From Tarkov. While you can find shelter in a fight by looking about, you must first know where you are in order to know where to go for loot. While Escape From Tarkov has a compass that you may use in the raid to determine the direction you are facing, it isn't really useful for determining where you are on a map. Finding Your Location in Escape From Tarkov: How to Tell Where You Are During a Raid

While you may believe that buying a map and carrying it with you is the simplest way to find out where you are in a raid, this is not the case. However, having an in-game map on you only provides you with a static map to look at, with no maker to identify your location. This is still useful when you learn the proper approach to figure out where you are in a raid, which is to memorize landmarks. Landmarks are an important part of Escape From Tarkov, and any veteran player will know most, if not all, of the game's landmarks. This is due to the fact that they are quite handy for indicating your location on a map. Every map has a landmark or two that can be viewed from anywhere on the map, allowing you to orient yourself at any time during a raid.

On some maps, an outer wall serves as a useful reference for determining your location. Woods, for example, has a large lake that runs down the map's southern edge. You can run straight south and hit the lake at practically any point on the map as you explore it. Because the lake is on the same part of the map as Jaeger's camp, this can be advantageous.

If you're truly lost, finding a wall is helpful, but for the most part, you'll want to stick to landmarks. You may always call up an external map and look at the landmarks on it to try to place yourself if you think you're in a secure spot and can afford to tab out of the game. On maps with structures, such as Customs and Reserve, using an external map is preferable. If you're on Woods or Shoreline, it's probably best to just find a wall and follow it.

You'll get better at passively recognizing where you are on a map and figuring out new ways as you play more of Escape From Tarkov. You'll eventually get to the point where you can determine where you are merely by looking at a map and recalling past events.
