Gemma Chan has been cast in The Moon Represents My Heart for Netflix with Shawn Levy
Gemma Chan is exploiting her popularity in superhero movies by appearing in an upcoming Netflix limited series about time travel. Gemma Chan is one of only a select handful of performers who have played numerous different roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Moon Represents My Heart, the debut book by Thai-Chinese novelist Pim Wangtechawat (whose website states that it will be published in the U.K. next year, although there is no information on an American publication), serves as the basis for the television series.
A British-Chinese family with the "hidden power to time travel" is the subject of The Moon Represents My Heart (is this more typical in British families than it is here?). The son and daughter of the family must go back in time to try to recover their parents after they unexpectedly vanish "when coming of age as adults." It appears that certain analogies are in use, which is entertaining—at least in the literary sense, as it can be challenging to learn how to be an adult in a world where your parents have passed away, even if it's due to time travel issues rather than death.
The Moon Represents My Heart, Pim Wangtechawat's upcoming debut novel, has been optioned in a competitive setting as part of the production company's overall agreement with the streamer. The project will be developed as a limited series. On behalf of Liza DeBlock of Mushens Entertainment, Grandview sold the option rights.
Shawn Levy and Josh Barry of 21 Laps, along with Gemma Chan, are executives producing the film about a British-Chinese family with a hidden time-traveling talent. After the parents disappear, their son and daughter continue to look for them as they grow older and become adults. Manager Moera Ainai and 21 Laps senior VP Emily Morris, who brought the book to Netflix, will handle the project for the producers.
In addition to her upcoming on-screen projects, which include the sci-fi film True Love from New Regency and the thriller Don't Worry, Darling from Olivia Wilde, Extrapolations from Apple, and a thriller from Olivia Wilde called Don't Worry, Chan is also set to serve as an executive producer on the upcoming Anna May Wong biopic, which is being made by Nina Yang Bongiovi and Working Title and written by Tony-winning playwright David Henry Hwang.
