Michael Fassbender is racing in 24 Hours of Le Mans
Christian Bale raced in a Ford GT40 in the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans in the film "Ford v Ferrari," which was released in 2019. At the 2022 race, another actor will step behind the wheel of a race car, but this time it will be unscripted. Beginning Saturday at the 2022 24 Hours of Le Mans, Michael Fassbender will be part of the Porsche 911 RSR-19 racing squad, alongside Canadian Zacharie Robichon and Australian Matt Campbell in the GTE-Am class, which includes at least one amateur driver.
The German-Irish actor featured as Magneto in the most recent X-Men series, as well as in Quentin Tarantino's "Inglourious Basterds" and the Academy Award-winning "12 Years a Slave," and as the Apple founder in "Steve Jobs," all of which earned him Academy Award nods. While his acting career has taken center stage, Fassbender has quietly built a successful racing career, finishing second in the 4 Hours of Portimo in Portugal in 2021. Here's everything you need to know about Michael Fassbender's racing career.
According to Motorsport, Fassbender participated in the national-level Porsche Sports Club, driving a Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, before moving up to the European Le Mans Series season in 2020. He competed with Richard Lietz and Felipe Fernandez Laser for the Proton Competition team in a 2017-spec Porsche 911 RSR.
According to the New York Times, Fassbender competed in two Porsche Supercup events in addition to the 2020 European Le Mans Series. Fassbender finished fourth twice during the 2020 season, once on the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps and once on the Algarve International Circuit. According to The Times, the following year he helped Proton Competition finish fourth in the championship and second in the 4 Hours of Portimo in Portugal. At the start of the 2022 season, he also finished third at Le Castellet.
