The Quarry: How to Unlock the Lovers Quarrel Achievement

Spoiler alert: we're about to explore one of Supermassive's interactive horror films The Quarry's worst successes. You can enter a sequence where Abigail is abruptly murdered by the guy she's had a crush on all summer if you play your cards incorrectly. The trophy/achievement Lovers' Quarrel is unlocked as a result of this. This will undoubtedly make a few top-ten lists one of the worst things you can do for your gamerscore points.

How to Get Nick to Kill Abigail in The Quarry

The good news is that in Chapter 6 when you play as Abigail in the pool house, it all comes down to a single split-second decision. The bad news is that it necessitates intentionally failing a simple battle phase. Combat has had very minor consequences up to this point in the game (unless you're Jacob), and that ends now. During the exploring scenario, choose to move the space heater closer to Nick to bring the scene to an end. This starts a conversation in which your responses don't seem to matter; you can either be supportive or correctly point out that Nick has become rather strange in the last half-hour or so.

Nick will seize Abigail in either case and fling her across the room, where she will locate a discarded rifle from the target-shooting classes. Like Abigail, you now have the option of dissuading Nick with a well-placed gunshot. Abigail will live if you succeed, but the pool house will require a fresh coat of paint. If you fail, which requires a conscious decision on your side because Nick won't move, he morphs and rips Abigail's head off. The pool house will still require a fresh coat of paint, but this time for a variety of reasons. This not only unlocks the Lovers' Quarrel trophy/achievement, but it also makes you feel bad about your choices.

Why You Should Do It and Why You Shouldn't

Allowing Abigail to die thus early in the game may be a bad move, depending on what you still need to do in The Quarry. Without Abigail, you won't be able to collect one of the final tarot cards, which will prevent you from unlocking an optional story sequence and another accomplishment. You can't count on Abigail to assist Kaitlyn in Chapter 10, which closes one of Kaitlyn's possible escape routes.

(Note: if Emma is alive and uninfected when Kaitlyn returns to the lodge in Chapter 8, you may be able to play as her instead in Chapter 9, but I haven't had the time to test this.) (It will be continued.)

As a result, if you've unlocked the Death Rewind feature, it might be worth it to use one of your lives to complete the achievement now, then continue the story with Abigail alive. This isn't the last time you can kill her, but it does expand your options for the ending. If you're going for Hackett's Quarry Massacre, the trophy/achievement for killing all nine counselors at the conclusion of the game, this is the quickest way to get Abigail off the board.
