British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has announced his resignation
After a series of high-profile resignations, Boris Johnson decided to step down. Today, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced his resignation from office, following the departure of more than 50 politicians and staff from the government since late Tuesday night, including three cabinet ministers. Overnight, there has been a steady stream of people resigning their positions.
Late on Tuesday, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rishi Sunak, and the Health Secretary, Sajid Javid, started a chain reaction by resigning their positions. Michelle Donelan, the Education Minister of the United Kingdom, tendered her resignation on Thursday, two days after taking office.
After it was reported that he would step down as the leader of the Conservative Party, a representative for Downing Street said that British Prime Minister Boris Johnson would address the nation later today. This comes after more than 50 resignations by ministers of varying ranks and the Tory MP aides who worked for them since July 5.
