Path of Exile: How to set up controller support

Path of Exile has featured integrated controller support from its first release on the PlayStation 4 and PC, followed by support on the Xbox One. However, a later patch for the game added support for controller inputs on the PC connection, assuming the controller is correctly connected and synchronized to the computer. Even though some settings need to be adjusted before the game is launched, the setup process is incredibly simple.

Connecting your controller to PC

The controller is obviously essential when playing Path of Exile with a controller. The majority of current console controllers, such as the DualShock 4 from Sony, the DualSense from the PlayStation 5, or the Xbox One or Series controllers from Microsoft, are suitable for the job because they all require little to no additional hardware to sync. All of these controllers include Bluetooth connectivity to the computer, allowing you to play wirelessly as long as Bluetooth is turned on in Windows 10's Settings menu's Devices section. By double-tapping the pair button next to the left trigger on Xbox controllers, you can connect them to your computer.

On the other hand, after holding down the PS button in the middle and the Create button in the top left corner simultaneously for around three seconds, the Dualshock 4 and the DualSense will pair. Remember that a third-party program like DS4Windows is needed for the Dualshock 4 to work properly on a PC.

Any of these controllers can also be connected to your PC via a USB connection if your PC doesn't support Bluetooth or if you'd like to keep your controller charged during the playing session. While Xbox Series controllers and the DualSense require USB-C cords, Xbox One controllers and the DualShock 4 support micro-USB connections from the top of the controller. When a new controller is plugged in via USB, your PC ought to recognize it immediately.

Using your controller in Path of Exile

You can start Path of Exile as usual after properly connecting your controller. However, be sure to head over to the Input Options menu, click the drop-down box next to "Input Method," and choose "Controller" before you begin playing. When you change your input method, if you have more than one controller connected, you can choose your preferred one from a second drop-down list below.

All in-game binds will be automatically changed to those of your selected controller when you select the controller configuration. For instance, flasks are by default assigned to the D-pad, whereas active skills are assigned to the four face buttons. However, within the game itself, there is currently no ability to rebind controller inputs.
