Overwatch 2: How the ping system works

One of the most essential elements in online multiplayer games has fast become ping mechanisms. The practice of pinging objects, adversaries, and locations to inform teammates of what you observe was pioneered by Apex Legends, but other games are starting to copy it. Overwatch fans have long requested a ping system, and with the release of the sequel, Blizzard is finally delivering their dream. Here is how Overwatch 2's ping system functions.

How to Ping in Overwatch 2

Whether you are using voice chat or not, Overwatch 2's ping system will let you send information to your teammates. By hitting G or your mouse's scroll wheel on a PC, you can ping. Pinging is done with the left D-pad on the console. The communication wheel will appear if you hold the input, but if you press quickly, an automatic response will be delivered based on what you are pointing at.

As an illustration, pinging an adversary will cause your character to announce their location and the ping icon to show above them. The icon will temporarily remain over their last known location with a question mark if they move out of your line of sight. Remember that some players have the ability to teleport swiftly, such as Sombra with her Translocator, so in situations like those, the icon will vanish.

Pinging has also been added to the game's standard communication wheel. When you request healing, a ping icon will appear over your hero, and your teammates can tell you who the nearest support teammate is by pointing it out to you. By focusing your reticle on it and pinging it, you can also confirm a teammate's ping. This might alert teammates that you are coming or are nearby to assist. There is a system in place to limit the number of pings, and you can block or hush certain teammates' pings if they are not being helpful. This is done to combat players who spam pings.
