Scorn: How to get to the saw or scoop

The first challenge in Scorn, a first-person survival horror game from Ebb Software, requires the player to decide whether to use a saw or a scoop, and it's a rather dramatic one. At the start of the game, you must first enlist the aid of a fleshy, humanoid creature in order to unlock the door preventing your passage through the alien edifice. One issue is that they are now encased in an egg. There are two ways to get them out, both of which are unquestionably against health and safety laws. We have the scoop—or the saw—if you're winding yourself up in knots thinking about what the result of either option would be.

Scorn: How to get to the saw or scoop

Choose carefully because, like in most games where decisions are important, in Scorn, deciding whether to use a saw or a scoop is an ethical choice that affects the course of the plot in more significant ways. There is no clear right or wrong answer, but the choice you make has a significant impact on how you will deal with this biomechanical environment and the bizarre creatures that live there. Here are the results of choosing the saw or scoop in Scorn without further ado.

The saw choice

Listen, we've seen how it appears. If you've grown attached to your little egg boy, you're probably less likely to subject them to whatever tortures this specific device has in store for them. The saw is a commanding, frighteningly devastating alternative. It might sound counterintuitive, but the saw is your only choice if you don't want to kill your new best friend in a brutal and untimely manner.

When turned on, the saw splits the egg's shell open, releasing the flesh inside. Help them out of the chair, wait for them to stand up, then bring them over to the nearby modification chute. The fleshling isn't much use to you without one of its own, and it's exactly the same as the chute that gave you the ability to utilize the door panel. As soon as it is resolved, guide them toward the door panel and engage with them as they fall to start the animation that opens the door.

The scoop choice

The pile of egg husks lying around this specific machine is a huge indication, so resist the urge to use the scoop. Context clues are an important aspect of Scorn. The scoop, umm, scoops your new friend out of their shell as soon as it is activated, murdering them in the process, and dumping their remains down the neighboring waste pipe. After you've given it some thought, go up to the scoop to get their severed arm and bring it to the modification chute. We're still looking down on you even if this approach is unquestionably quicker than waiting around for the fleshling to develop walking skills.

How to get to the saw or scoop

You must alter the rail tracks from the central podium in Scorn to get your flesh to the saw or scoop. Close the bottom left track to go to the scoop. Close the bottom left and right tracks to access the saw. Once you've chosen, go back to the trolley that has your egg friend and use it to manually move it along the track so you can get where you're going.
