With the introduction of Overwatch 2, new initiatives and policies are being implemented to fight toxicity and different vulnerabilities that persisted throughout the previous game's lifespan. Blizzard has pledged to players that they will do everything in their power to combat anyone who would want to ruin their experience by launching the Defense Matrix project. With these new procedures in place, before you can play Overwatch 2, you must add a legitimate phone number to your Battle.net account. Here's how to configure Overwatch 2's SMS Protection.
How to set up SMS Protect in Overwatch 2
Go to the Battle.net account website and sign in using the Battle.net account you'll be using for Overwatch 2 in order to configure SMS Protection. To add a phone number, click on Account Details and scroll down. When you enter your phone number, a code will be sent to your phone as a text message that you must enter on the website to confirm that it is indeed your number. You are ready to go if you entered the code correctly.
When deploying SMS Protect, there are a few things to keep in mind. To begin with, a phone number can only be linked to one account. This is an effort to prevent the formation of smurf accounts that pair more competent players with a less serious audience. You also can't use some pre-paid phone numbers or VOIP to sign up for a Battle.net account.
Unfortunately, those who rely on pre-paid numbers must either utilize a family member's contract-based phone or switch to a regular plan in order to access Overwatch 2. This security measure was put in place to ensure that cheaters who are banned can't just change their number on an app to rejoin the game and ruin it for everyone else.
