Despite the fact that this year's graphics card conversation has been dominated by Nvidia and Intel, AMD has just burst through the doors to announce the newest RDNA 3 GPUs from their Radeon division. The RDNA 3 architecture, which has been eagerly anticipated by enthusiasts, will be introduced in their upcoming GPU versions. The business has declared that they won't be using the controversial 12VHPWR connector, which has been blamed for some graphics cards melting.

The two RDNA 3 GPUs from AMD that have been so far announced will go on sale on December 13. The top-tier GPUs were disclosed as predicted by the rumors, which actually happened. The 7900 XT and XTX GPUs, as well as their partner variants, will debut on the same day. Scott Herkelman, SVP, and GM for AMD's Radeon unit made the announcement through Twitter. Over the past year or so, AMD has been very secretive about what they plan to offer, giving only small hints about their new graphics cards.

However, there are leaks almost everywhere, as with any forthcoming PC component. This is also true of RDNA 3. The entry-level RDNA 3 cards are likely to come out in 2023 when Nvidia's 4070 and lower GPUs will also be available.

AMD Radeon 7000 price

AMD appears to have seen Nvidia's price trajectory and is determined to seize power from the Green Team. Pricing both the 7900 XT and 7900 XTX significantly lower than the recently unveiled RTX 4090 will be the initial step in this process. In comparison to Nvidia's $1500 minimum for the RTX 4090, which may place these two AMD cards at arm's length in terms of gaming performance, the two cards will cost $899 and $999, respectively.

It is difficult to predict the price of a GPU in 2022, as it is with every GPU. Both AMD and Nvidia will have a difficult few months ahead with Bitcoin effectively in free fall and some lines of it abandoning graphics card mining. The second-hand market is currently overrun with used or unsold GPUs. We don't yet know if AMD will follow Nvidia's example and make new lines of 30-series cards to go with the small number of cards available at launch for the 40-series.

AMD isn't trying to be subtle about this, but the presentation offered no hints about actual performance figures. While we did receive our specifications, the multipliers and graphs were merely hazy. Before we can try to make any informed assessments of their performance, the cards will need to start falling.

Outside of this, the specs do appear to have increased significantly, particularly in terms of output. While we fully anticipate that both cards will perform admirably in 4K gaming (without ray tracing), AMD actually has a leg up on Nvidia in this area. DisplayPort 1.4 has been available for a while. It still comes as standard on many PC motherboards and has an advantage over HDMI. High refresh rates and similar concepts have been around much longer than HDMI. The RDNA 3 GPUs will support DisplayPort 2.1; however, Nvidia chose to go with 1.4. This should free the user from having to use a specific port and let them use much faster refresh rates at higher resolutions than they could before.

What is AMD RDNA?

AMD's current graphics architecture is called RDNA, or Radeon DNA. It was initially introduced with the RX5000 series, but later RDNA 2, which is currently used to power the Xbox Series X and S, PS5, and Steam Deck, replaced it. It can also be found in the current GPU portfolio from AMD. However, RDNA 3 intends to deliver 50% higher performance than its forerunner. AMD will employ the 5nm process to achieve this performance increase.

The internal components of the GPU may be made to fit much more onto the die by decreasing them from 7 nm to 5 nm, which results in a better-performing card. The same manufacturing facility, TSMC, also uses the 5nm process for Nvidia's 40-series products. RDNA 3 graphics cards, which are currently in their third iteration, reportedly use PCIe 5.0 and DisplayPort 2.0. One of our main critiques of Nvidia's RTX 4090 graphics cards is their use of DisplayPort 1.4a, which is constrained by the port's display certifications. This could be AMD's secret weapon.
