Chris Ayres, the voice of Frieza in Dragon Ball, has died
Chris Ayres, the voice of Frieza in Dragon Ball, died at the age of 56. Actor Krystal LaPorte broke the news on Twitter, writing a heartbreaking message about Ayres' death on October 18th, surrounded by family and friends. "Chris adored you all," LaPorte wrote in a heartfelt message to his fans. The great majority of our chats were around how much he loved other people. Thank you to those of you who returned his affection. You were the fuel for his fight, those of you who kept in touch, checked on him, reminded him that he was so much more than his work. You fueled his hopes for a better future, keeping him going longer than any regular person could.
Ayres has long struggled with COPD, and earlier this year he told to followers that he was preparing for another round of gruelling procedures, and that he had made it out of surgery safely. After joining Funimation's dub of Dragon Ball Z Kai, Ayres assumed the role of Frieza in the Dragon Ball series. He had been a part of the franchise ever then, and he had continued through Dragon Ball Super's full anime run, which ended with the release of the Dragon Ball Super: Broly film. Ayres needed a double lung transplant after being diagnosed with end-stage COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) in 2017. As a result, Ayres had been battling the sickness for the past few years, but he persevered with numerous announcements and updates to fans.
Ayres has not only had a significant impact on the Dragon Ball franchise as Freeza's voice actor, but he has also delivered a number of anime performances throughout the years, including Kei Kurono in Gantz, Corset in Panty & Stocking With Garterbelt, Everlue in Fairy Tail, and many, many more.
