Sea of Thieves: Where to find and how to use Signal Flares

Season Five of Sea of Thieves brought a slew of new features to the game. Rare also introduced Signal Flares, which are useful objects for signaling danger and lighting up dark places, in addition to these lesser improvements. They work in a similar way as Fireworks, but with a few subtle modifications. In Sea of Thieves, this guide will show you where to find Signal Flares and how to utilize them successfully.

Finding Signal Flares

Red Signal Flares and White Signal Flares are the two sorts of Signal Flares seen in Sea of Thieves, and each has its distinct purpose. Signal Flares, like Fireworks, appear at random in Resource Barrels and Crates all throughout the planet. When you initially load into the game, though, you'll find a few Signal Flares of each type already in the Cannonball Barrels on your ship, unlike Fireworks. This is quite convenient because you won't have to waste time looking for any before setting sail unless you want to collect more.

Using Signal Flares

To use a Signal Flare, first make sure one is in your inventory, then choose and equip it. Now approach an empty Cannon on your ship. Get on the Cannon, load the flare with Y, aim it into the sky, and fire with Right Trigger (RT). The fuse on the Signal Flare will burn out before it fires, causing a minor delay. Depending on the type of Signal Flare you fired, it will fly for a short time before exploding into a red or white ball of light in the sky.

Red Signal Flares are used to warn of impending danger. If one of your crew members is on an island and you're at your ship while an enemy Galleon approaches, fire a Red Signal Flare into the sky to inform your crewmate. White Signal Flares, with their dazzling illumination and huge radius, is used to light up dark islands at night. While these are the most common applications, you can use them in any way you like. Use Signal Flares to frighten hostile ships away, draw attention to something, or hit an enemy ship with one to set it on fire.
