Elden Ring: Can you change voiceover and subtitle language?
As one might expect from a high-fantasy epic from the authors of Dark Souls, Elden Ring contains a lot of text and dialogue. NPCs can hand off missions and sell you items all over the place, but what if you wanted Deathbed Companion Fia to whisper lovely nothings in your ear in, say, Spanish? Unfortunately, changing the language of Elden Ring's subtitles and the voiceover is not easy, but don't give up hope just yet.
Your first reaction might be to search in Elden Ring's options menu, but the only choice connected to subtitles is to switch them on or off. In fact, there are no language selections at all in the game. On Steam, at least, you can change the game's default language directly from the platform. Simply right-click Elden Ring in your Steam library, choose "Properties," then "Language."
When you do this, the game's subtitles and UI will change to your preferred language. The spoken dialogue, on the other hand, will continue to be in your default language. This appears to be linked to something else, probably your localization settings when the game was purchased, and it currently appears that there is no way to modify it without physically rummaging through critical game files and potentially causing other issues.
Users of consoles will face a similar scenario, but there have been claims that changing the system's language does not always affect the game's text, let alone the dialogue. Language difficulties appear to be linked to localization settings at the time of purchase once again. English-speaking players who acquired the game early by setting their console's region to an Asian country have reported that the game's language is permanently switched to Chinese.
There isn't much in the way of a solution for these problems right now. Hopefully, FromSoft will address this in a future version, as the lack of language selections appears to be an odd omission. Because the information is plainly available in other languages, the inability to change your language in-game — or at all, in some circumstances — is an odd error.
