As soon as you approach the area, head south from the Lake of Rot Shoreside site of grace and wander along the shorelines to find a corpse carrying this map fragment. This is one of the game's easiest map segments to find, but it's completely missable because it's an underground map position that isn't designated by an icon on any preliminary map.
The area you can now view is rather extensive in terms of geography, but most of it is desert, so you'll need to use some of the pressure plates designated by monuments to create more platforms so you can freely explore this lake.
It cannot be overstated how important it is to equip all of your gear with the highest possible Resistance stats, including Immunity, and to bring plenty of Scarlet Rot treatments. The potential of infection is always here, and while there are foes, death by decay is far more likely.
