Final Fantasy XIV: How to get an Airship
Every Final Fantasy game has featured airship travel, and Final Fantasy XIV is no exception. Final Fantasy XI, Square Enix's previous MMO, employed an airship transport mechanism that forced players to wait in real-time for the ship to arrive at its destination. Thankfully, this does not apply to Final Fantasy XIV, although it isn't to say that flying isn't a feature of the game.
By completing the main story mission, new players will be able to travel by airship between major city centers. When the character employs this travel technique, a small cutscene will play, and they will then be at the destination of their choice shortly after. When traveling from the player's initial city to one of the other two locales around level 15, the first unlock occurs.
By going through the plot in those regions, the player will eventually be able to travel to Ishgard and other expansion cities. The First, a whole new realm in Shadowbringers, retains the airship system that was unlocked throughout the main tale.
In Final Fantasy XIV, players who join a Free Company, the game's version of guilds, will be able to send personalized airships out on Exploratory Voyages through the workshop in their Free Company house. These outings last a set amount of time and provide the Free Company with a variety of incentives. Free Company Airships require a variety of materials, and each airship has its own set of stats and will progress through the ranks as it completes expeditions.
