When you first get your first automobile, pressing the nitro button will have no effect.

All you have to do now is go to the parts shop and boost your Collector Level to the point where you can access the Extreme auto parts section. This is unlocked at level 7, which is rather early in the game given how easily additional cars may be unlocked to improve that level.

After you've acquired this, you can spend 100,000 credits to buy and install a Nitro System for your vehicle. This appears to be a fair niche application that would most likely assist you on courses with a lot of straightaways.

If anything, this is a gimmick, but the choice is there if you want to use it. This approach would be especially useful on tracks like Northern Isle Speedway, Special Stage Route X, or any other course where you don't have to worry about turning too hard.
