Tunic: How to defeat the Guard Captain
The Guard Captain, a beefed-up version of the Rudeling knights you've already fought, is the first in a lengthy succession of tough enemies you'll face in Tunic. Guardhouse 1's top floor is where you'll find him. Once you've cleared the path, you'll be up against one regular Rudeling and the Captain himself, who's eager to show you how he achieved his promotion.
The Guard Captain is a heavy puncher, and by this point in the game, even a few strikes from him will knock you out. You're unlikely to have the shield yet, but rolling grants you a few frames of invincibility, which will help you avoid strikes and get close enough to deliver damage.
Concentrate your efforts on the normal Rudeling first, since he has a penchant for slicing at you just as you dodge out of the way of one of the good Captain's assaults. It's Cap's turn when he's down.
The Guard Captain will utilize two major strikes, each with somewhat distinct tells: a sweeping arc slash, similar to his normal soldiers, and a stabbing assault that hits straight in front of him. Continue to strike him, but don't get greedy: if you try to land too many strikes at once, you'll miss out on the chance to roll out of the way of his next attack.
Preparation is essential here as well. You'll have found your first health potion and a few explosives if you've explored the woodland thoroughly before going off to meet the Captain. If you take a few strikes, the potion will restore your HP, and if you manage to bring him in the radius, he'll die in a couple of bomb hits. However, because he likes to run around, getting the shot just perfect might be difficult.
Keep attacking him, utilize your roll to your advantage, and don't get greedy, and you'll be able to take out the Guard Captain in no time. It'll make ringing the Eastern Bell that much more enjoyable.
