The Blacklist has previously honored a deceased member of the cast and crew of the program. The sixth episode of Season 8 back in February 2021 honored actor Clark Middleton, who portrayed DMV staffer Glen Carter in 13 episodes of the program. Middleton battled the West Nile Virus till he passed away on October 20 at the age of 63. In an interview with a news organization, the show's creator, Jon Bokenkamp, revealed that he and Clark had grown close over the past few years and that they frequently went out to eat, met after press appearances, and chatted about movies.

The following year, in 2020, a special episode of The Blacklist paid respect to Brian Dennehy. Dennehy, who played Dominic Wilkinson, the grandpa of Elizabeth Keen and the father of Russian spy Katarina Rostove, passed away in April 2020 at the age of 81. Dennehy began the program in Season 3 and has since made nine appearances, including two in Season 7.
