Pokémon Go Friends' inclusion in 2018 paved the way for the inclusion of other elements that have since become pillars of the game, such as trading and giving gifts.
It takes more than just playing Pokémon Go with your friends after work or school to build a friend list. Building the finest squad for Go Battle League and leveling up by earning enormous XP benefits when you become in-game best friends are just two examples of how it has become an essential component of every aspect of the game. Due to the addition of exclusive 7km eggs, you will need the assistance of your pals if you just want to capture them all. So, if you want to get the most out of Pokémon Go, you need to get in touch with your inner My Little Ponyta and start building relationships.
What does Friendship mean in Pokémon Go?
The value of friendship is well-known among Pokémon anime fans. One of the longest-lasting connections of any of our childhoods is Ash's partnership with his Pikachu, and his friendships with Brock and Misty still exist today. You can choose between these two interpretations of friendship in Pokémon Go. With some Pokémon, you can first increase your friend level, albeit that is not the topic of this article. Check out our dedicated Buddy Adventures page for more details on the buddy system.
But we're going to focus on the type of camaraderie our humanoid heroes have here (or even Jesse and James if you prefer). Making friends (and maintaining them) has developed into a crucial component of the game, on which several significant elements are built and concealed. With the Friends system, you can:
- Follow your friends' progress, including their Trainer Level, the number of Pokémon they've caught, and the distance they've traveled.
- With the friends you are currently interacting with, trade Pokémon.
- The only way to obtain 7km Eggs and the unique Pokémon they contain is to send and receive gifts.
- Obtain a greater attack bonus during gym/raid attacks, and after a raid, get extra Premier Balls.
- When trading, use less stardust and even special trades for the rarest Pokémon.
- To obtain Lucky Pokémon, become Lucky Friends and engage in Lucky Trades.
Although there are many features and systems to go over, let's start with the fundamentals by discussing how to add a buddy in Pokémon Go.
How to add Friends in Pokémon Go and where to find your Trainer Code
In Pokémon Go, adding friends is really simple and you don't even have to be a certain level to do so. However, it's vital to remember that in order to trade Pokémon with other players, you must have reached Trainer Level 10. When you want to add a buddy, tap the trainer icon in the bottom left corner of the main screen to access your Trainer screen, and then tap the "Friends" option in the top right corner.
You will then be directed to a page with your 12-digit trainer code by tapping "Add Friend." Consider it like the Nintendo Friend Code: in order to add someone, you must know their code; you cannot simply search for Shuhei Yoshida and cross your fingers. After entering the field with your friend's trainer code, you can send them a request. Once they accept your invitation, you are friends and don't need to exchange trainer codes.
You can also click QR Code in the top right corner of the screen if copying and reading out long stretches of code seems like too much work. Here, you can hasten the process by scanning your pals and sharing your own QR code. When playing with a new group of trainers, this is quite helpful. It should be mentioned that trainers who "need parental consent and registration through the Pokémon Trainer Club to play Pokémon Go will not be allowed to trade with other trainers in the game," as stated by Niantic, will not be able to do so.
How to Increase Pokémon Go Friendship Levels
There are various ways to raise your friend's friendship level, but they all revolve around in-game interactions.
- Sending Gifts.
- Participating in Raids and Gym battles together.
- Engaging in Trainer Battles.
- Trading Pokémon.
No matter how many times you trade, combat, or raid together, you can only advance your friendship once every day. As a result, after you do one of the aforementioned tasks, you must wait until the next day to advance it further.
Pokémon Go Friendship bonuses and how to become Best Friends
It will take several months to reach the game's top Friendship Level because you can only advance your friendship with each friend once every day. There are four different friendship levels to achieve:

What else do you need to know about the Friends feature in Pokémon Go?
The Friendship function has a number of peculiarities that you should be aware of:
- In Pokémon Go, the maximum friend list size is 400, up from 200 at launch. This is more than enough to begin constructing friendship levels with both close friends and a number of raid groups.
- Your Niantic Profile is now used to share your friend list across all Niantic Games.
- The Trainer Code box will only post the code itself if you copy the Trainer Code message that you received from a friend and put it there. Handy!
- To let you know a gift or friend request is pending, a red dot will appear in the top left corner of the home screen, above the Trainer icon.
- If you don't want friendship and gift alerts to appear, you may turn them off in the settings.
- Friends can be filtered and sorted by name, nickname, friendship level, and gift status in addition to having their nicknames assigned to them.
- Using the search phrases "friendlevel0" through "friendlevel4", you can sort your friends according to your level of friendship. Use the search phrase "interactable" to identify friends who you can still interact with. Both "gifted" and "fortunate" have similar effects!
- A random recent activity is sent to your friends through the friend feed. Currently, there is no method to "push" a particular update to your friend feed.
- You must manually enter each Friend entry if you wish to compare information like level, walking distance, and creatures caught because there are no leaderboards available in the Friend feed.
- There is presently no option to "opt-out" of the information you share or the updating of your friend feed. If you are concerned about this, pick your friends wisely!
- Similar to gyms, your friends will see your buddy Pokémon by their selected nickname rather than by their full name. In essence, this is a custom text area that friends can view, so pick your friends wisely since you might see something potentially objectionable.
- Being best friends, the highest level of friendship, is recognized with a medal. Bronze is one best friend, silver is two, gold is three, and platinum is twenty.
- The Friendship Level and perks you previously achieved will be restored once you remove and then add a friend.
- It was rumored that the 1,000 XP award for being a person's "good friend," the lowest level of friendship, had been eliminated to prevent players from gaining a lot of XP quickly by adding new friends and sending and opening gifts.
- After adding someone as a friend, changing your trainer moniker may have an impact on the perks that are being used. Niantic advises you to delete and re-add your friend in order to resolve this issue.
- Additionally, the UI may alter as your friendship levels rise. Niantic says that the game's interface shows how a friendship grows as it slowly and purposefully unlocks more and more important prizes.
