Pokémon Go: How to send and receive Gifts

As part of the Friendship and Trading features introduced in 2018, Pokémon Go Gifts are unique gifts you can send to your pals. There are many advantages to giving and receiving gifts, ranging from the visible and tangible to the subtle and collectible. Beyond a speedy replenishment of Pokéballs and Potions, the most obvious benefit is the daily increase in your Friendship Level. Additionally, the only method to obtain the rare 7km eggs with their special egg pools is through opening gifts. Most recently, this was the case for the new Hisuian Forms that were released in July 2022. To get the most out of Pokémon Go, you need to know how presents work, including how to send and receive them.

Pokémon Go: How to send and receive Gifts

How to get gifts in Pokémon Go

In Pokémon Go, gifts are distinct items since you can only open them when you get them from a friend. The Gift system mainly relies on randomness, just like most other aspects of Pokémon Go. This begins with how you receive gifts. You may discover that you occasionally pick up gifts in addition to your standard supply of Poké Balls and Potions as you travel the world spinning PokéStops. As you give up your maximum of 30 gifts, your chances of picking them up increase as your gift count decreases. Nevertheless, as part of in-game festivals and events, the maximum number of presents you can carry and the frequency at which they drop are constantly changed. These are the kinds of events to keep an eye out for if you're the type of trainer who enjoys giving gifts to your pals.

If your connection with your buddy Pokémon is strong enough, it might also occasionally bring you a present to give to a buddy. You aren't guaranteed to get a gift with every spin, just like you're only guaranteed to get other goods like Poké Balls and evolution items. So what do you do with all of your gifts now that you have them? Unfortunately, you are unable to open them yourself; instead, you must harness your inner Delibird and send them to a friend. How to use this function may be found on our page on adding friends in Pokémon Go.

How to send Gifts in Pokémon Go

After adding a friend in Pokémon Go, you can access their trainer profile by tapping on your icon in the bottom left corner of the screen, followed by the word "Friends" in the top right corner. Locate the buddy you want to send a gift to, tap on them, and their profile will appear. The option to send a gift may be found on the bottom left of the screen, below their XP bar. Unlike trading, sending presents doesn't require you to be nearby, so you can send and receive gifts from trainers anywhere in the world. When you click "Send Present," a screen with a list of gifts and postcards indicating their sources will appear, asking you which gift you want to send.

All presents were the same until the summer of 2022, and your preference was irrelevant. Trainers may now store the postcards in an album thanks to the Postcard Book feature, though. Does it matter in the larger scheme of things? NoDoes your friend enjoy viewing images of the parks, churches, or other notable places in your community? They might choose to save the postcard to look at later if you send them the item you believe they'll enjoy.

You also have the choice to add a sticker to your postcard, which works similarly to how the postcard doesn't really change anything. If you believe they'll make your friend smile, feel free to include them, even though this achieves nothing mechanically. Once you click "Send," your gift will be quickly taken away. Each trainer may only receive one present from you at a time, and you may only provide one gift to each trainer each day. If the "Send a Gift" button is grayed out, you have either already sent a gift or the recipient still has one from a prior exchange.

How to open a Gift in Pokemon Go

The game will notify you when a friend sends you a gift if you have notifications switched on. If not, check your friend list and see if the tiny gift icon appears next to their name. When you click on it, their trainer profile will be overlaid with a present that moves. Watch the treats burst out of the button as you click it. This will boost your friendship by one unit if you haven't spoken to your friend today, bringing you one step closer to making in-game best friends.

What do you get from Pokémon Go Gifts?

Niantic claims that while the contents of gifts are often "greater value than what trainers normally acquire from spinning PokéStops," they contain "a variety of valuable goods" that include everything you can earn from a PokéStop as well as a few uncommon extras. This comprises:

  • Poké Balls
  • Great Balls
  • Ultra Balls
  • Potion Potion
  • Super Potion
  • Hyper Potion
  • Max Revives
  • Pinap Berry
  • Evolution items such as King's Rock and Sun Stone
  • Rare Candy
  • Stardust
  • 7km Eggs

The only gift-only product that is unique and unavailable elsewhere is the 7km Egg. Originally, they would hatch into an Alolan Pokémon from the Kanto region, but as in-game events change, so do the potential Pokémon in each 7km egg. Keep a watch on the revolving pool in case there are any Pokémon you need for Great League or Ultra League—while some of these Pokémon are more desirable than others, they frequently have Go Battle League significance. As with all eggs, keep in mind that if you run out of egg slots, you won't receive any eggs as gifts. Open a Gift after an egg has hatched but before you spin a PokéStop or defeat a Go Rocket Team Leader, if you desire a 7km Egg.

What are Sponsored Gifts in Pokémon Go?

In contrast to the pattern we outlined above, sponsored gifts cannot be distributed to friends and must be opened when they are received. Like everything else, these pink gift boxes can be found as PokéStop drops or sometimes as little hot air balloons. These won't spontaneously appear, but depending on your region and whether Niantic is currently having a sponsored event, you might see them now and then. In the same way that you would receive a typical gift, tapping these will display you a postcard with the sponsor's logo and then drop you a few random goodies. If you are interested in the sponsor's advertisement, you then have the choice to "Learn more" about them.

There are a few other points to consider regarding these sponsored gifts:

  • Only so many can be opened each day.
  • Trainers with children's accounts are not eligible to receive sponsored gifts.
  • Through the standard Settings menu, all trainers can choose not to receive sponsored gifts.

What else do you need to know about gift boxes in Pokémon Go?

Other peculiarities of gifts that you should be aware of include:

  • The simplest technique to raise your friendship level is to provide gifts. Send gifts once per day until you are one interaction away from leveling up since there are some great benefits for doing so. After that, it is customary to time the opening of gifts so that both players can benefit from the significant XP boost that comes with increasing your friendship level.
  • The maximum number of gifts you can have in your inventory at once is 30.
  • Each day, only 30 gifts may be opened.
  • Since the July 2018 Lucky Pokémon update, you receive 200 XP for every gift sent.
  • When your friend opens a gift, you are informed of how many goods are inside. The specific contents are seen on your News feed.
  • You don't have to open a gift you've received in order to send one back (if you are waiting for a spare egg slot, for example). To send one, simply select the cross at the bottom of the screen to cancel the gift (you can still access it later; it won't be removed).
  • Each gift will be accompanied by a postcard that displays the Pokéstop from which it was obtained. Now that you can pin postcards to your postcard book, you may keep and collect them. When introducing the Postcard feature, Niantic stated, "We want this to match the feeling of when a buddy gives you a present from a store you appreciate or sends you a postcard from a far-off land." It brings two trainers together while they are on their travels and is purposefully sentimental. What a thrill it would be if a trainer gave a gift from a unique vacation destination or a rare occasion. "
  • You won't be able to unwrap a gift if your item bag is already full.
