In Splatoon 3, the popular Splatfest events are back. These new Splatfests will go one step further, providing a third team for players to choose from, rather than splitting the player base between two thematic teams. The culmination of these enlarged Splatfests will be a brand-new game mode that matches all three teams against one another simultaneously. The evolution of Splatfests in Splatoon 3 is shown below.
What’s new in Splatoon 3’s Splatfests – Tricolor Turf Wars Explained
The Tricolor Turf War match format is the centerpiece of the new Splatfest tournaments. Teams of players compete to cover as much of the map's surface area with their own team's color of ink, similar to typical turf war matches. In Tricolor Turf War, one team of four players defends against two smaller squads of two players each, rather than the usual two teams of four players.
Tricolor Turf War's in-game teams will each represent one of the three Splatfest teams. The victorious team will receive points toward their Splatfest position if they triumph in a Tricolor match. This scoring system can create some opportunistic, enemy-of-my-enemy alliances between Splatfest teams that can manifest in the Tricolor Turf War, along with the four-versus-two-versus-two dynamic.
Tricolor Turf War won't completely replace traditional Turf War as the event's single game mode, so fans of the scoring procedures from prior Splatfests shouldn't relax. All upcoming Splatfests will feature a four-versus-four turf war in the first half, with a Tricolor expansion in the second half to complete the event. On August 27, you can play a playable demo of Splatoon 3 and its new systems if you're eager to experience this new kind of Splatfest.
