Reading up is the next best thing because Joel and Ellie can't enroll in a survival course due to time constraints.

Some of these are so potent that you'll wonder how you survived without them, while others are so cunningly concealed that you can play the game through several times and still not locate them all. Training Manual 1 — Shiv: Sharpening
You should pick up your first training manual in Bill's Town. The instruction manual is one of many items to be picked up once you escape Bill's leg snare trap and follow him into the bar. You will have a hard time missing it, though. With the exception of shiv doors, this manual will enable you to use all of your shivs twice instead of just one.
Training Manual 2 — Health: Splinting
After escaping the initial ambush at the level's beginning and arriving in Pittsburgh, you will find a horrific scene when you enter a garage. Find the mattress on the floor with the second manual in the corner among the other stuff in the room. This manual will make health kits better so that they heal 33% more healthily than they do now.
Training Manual 3 — Shiv: Reinforcement
There is a copy of this manual in Chapter 5, but it is much farther within the old hotel. You can locate a safe on the ground floor behind the front desk after entering the lobby. By using the ladder to climb up the wall behind the collapsed staircase to a narrow ledge you can slide over, you can discover the code for it. This will result in a suitcase containing the code. Bring it back, get your instructions, and open the safe. Depending on whether you have the first manual or not, this handbook will make all of your shivs survive two or three extra uses. Once more, shiv doors won't function with this.
Training Manual 4 — Melee: Knots
Stay in Pittsburgh after you've gotten out of the cellar and Ellie has saved you from a man attempting to drown Joel in a puddle. After passing the restrooms and a route that leads nowhere, ascend the steps. There is a desk with the fourth training manual on top right before a cluster of tables that you need to mantle over. Using this guidebook, you can improve your weapons to make them hit one more time after any changes you make.
Training Manual 5 — Molotov: Construction
After meeting Henry and Sam, our temporary companions, and dodging the armored car with the turret, we arrive at the final manual in this lengthy Pittsburgh chapter. After the opening scene, exit the bedroom and turn right to enter the kitchen. This guidebook is right there on the counter, just like a recipe. Your Molotov cocktail explosion radius will expand by 1.5 times thanks to this manual.
Training Manual 6 — Bomb: Containment
We finally leave Chapter 5 in Chapter 6, as we enter The Suburbs. You wash ashore on the coast and go straight into the sewers. Continue forward until you enter a door and hear an alarm go off. Pick up the new Shorty weapon as you advance, then keep moving forward to a shelf against the wall. On the middle shelf, close to some plastic containers, is this guidebook. This strangely named manual performs the exact opposite of what it says in the title. It will increase the Nail Bombs' explosive radius by 1.5 times.
Training Manual 7 — Melee: Techniques
Head down the neighborhood street until you see the ice cream truck, and enter the house to the left of it. This is still Chapter 6, but you're in the suburbs now. When you reach the second story, tilt your camera upward to reveal the wire that hangs from the ceiling and has a prompt for opening an attic hatch on it. You will need to go downstairs, speak with Ellie, and lift her up to fetch the manual for you because if you try to pull the ladder down, it will break. This will allow you to get to the tight location. Depending on whether you found the first melee handbook or not, this one will add one or two more hits to the life of your weapon modifications.
Training Manual 8 — Smoke: Chemistry
You will encounter Joel's brother Tommy near the dam early on in Chapter 7. He will take you inside and give you a brief tour. You'll find some men reviewing some ideas inside after passing the dog and entering. On the table next to it is this eighth manual, and to their left is a workbench. Your smoke bombs' effects will now last 10 seconds longer thanks to this manual.
Training Manual 9 — Health: Sterilization
Moving on, Chapter 8 will introduce you to the fictitious University of Eastern Colorado. Follow the standard path through the level until you come to a big square where you see a number of monkeys running around. You can reach the second level by climbing a dumpster, an awning, and an open window on the right side of this square. As soon as you enter, turn sharply to the right, and search for a long desk beside the windows. This guidebook is sitting right next to the computer. The amount of health that Health Kits restore will go up by 67% because of this manual.
Training Manual 10 — Molotov: Deployment
Continue with Chapter 8 and use the dumpster to open the gate to the science building. Once you're inside, look for room 205, which must be jimmied open with a shiv and is locked. This new training manual on the desk is one of the numerous things inside to grab. If you also found the last upgrade guide, this one will make your Molotov cocktails explode twice as far away.
Training Manual 11 — Smoke: Shaping
Play all the way through Chapter 9's wintery scenes until you take over as Joel a second time. You will pass a gas station on the right side of the roadway as you head toward the lodge. You may wish to take a detour to the motel on the left. It has a wooden shed on the opposite side that you must open with a shiv. You can take your fifth and final training manual from inside. This manual will extend the life of your Smoke Bomb by 20 seconds.
Training Manual 12 — Bomb: Shrapnel
Last but not least, while underground in Chapter 10, we shall get our final Training Manual. Search for a large semi-truck in the tunnel's center after sneaking or fighting your way inside. Ascend to the top. The manual is located near the rear. Your nail bombs' detonation radius will double thanks to this manual.
