Kid will ask to join your group when you first arrive at Cape Howl and finish your battle with the troops. You should decline her offer. After that, the game will question you two more times. Continue to say no until Kid gets the message and departs. Kid is no longer permanently locked, unlike other recruitable characters. Once you reach Termina, the next village, you'll be able to recruit her.

The only disadvantage to rejecting Kid so early is that you won't be able to receive the Tele-Porter until you enlist her, which allows you to swap out your party members at saving spots or in the overworld.
